WebThe Gasholder Building, built in 1889, is a unique remnant of our industrial heritage, the only known surviving gasholder structure west of the Appalachian Mountains. The Gasholder Building was used to store manufactured coal gas from 1889 until 1918. Coal gas provided both light and heat in many late 19th century cities including Oberlin. WebThe building was designed by Frederick A. Sabbaton, an engineer who specialized in gasworks. He was superintendent of the Troy Gas Works from 1862 to 1890. The building measures 65 feet tall to the top of the cupola.
